The Unconscious

Psychodynamic psychotherapists, in particular, believe in the power of the unconscious mind. The unconscious is present in what we say and do as well as in our play, drawings, dreams, decisions, jokes and slips of the tongue. The unconscious contains relics of past experiences, which continue to influence us in the present, often without our conscious awareness.

Becoming aware of the unconscious can enable individuals to manage their emotions and experiences, make safer choices, have healthier relationships, achieve better mental health and live happier, more rewarding lives. 

In Treatment

Psychotherapy is a non-directive talking therapy, so what happens in each 50 minute therapy session is determined by the client. S/he might choose to talk, play, draw or sit and think quietly with the therapist.

The psychotherapist will be attentive to the content and process of the session and will verbalise observations and interpretations about what might be happening both consciously and unconsciously.

The psychotherapist will be attentive to the themes that develop in what the individual brings to therapy and will make links between past and present experiences in an effort to better understand what might be going on for the client.

 
 

 Sea Psychotherapy Treatment Model

  • Initial consultation with the young person and their parent/carer lasting approximately 1 hour
  • Five individual psychotherapy assessment/introductory sessions of 50 minute duration over five consecutive weeks
  • Review appointment with young person and their parent/carer to consolidate the assessment and agree together to continue or terminate psychotherapy treatment
  • Individual psychotherapy sessions of 50 minute duration in blocks of 6 - 12 sessions with regular reviews as appropriate to the age and presentation of the young person 

Therapy may take place with the individual young person or with the individual parent, or it may incorporate parent/carer and child work or family sessions as indicated. 

Treatment for children & young people is usually face-to-face. Skype therapy service is also available for older (usually 16+) young people & for parent/carer consultations if this method of working is preferred by the client.  

Psychotherapy Treatment Duration

The duration of psychotherapy treatment depends on the nature of the referral and the age and presentation of the young person. Some people benefit from a brief therapy of 6 - 10 sessions while others may need and choose longer term therapy lasting several months or sometimes years.

The decisions to begin and end therapy are important ones that are made jointly between the young person, their parent/carer and the therapist. Careful planning and thinking about is essential before starting or stopping a period of therapy, however brief and whatever the age of the young person.

Sudden, unplanned for breaks and endings can replicate previous losses. This 
will usually have a psychologically detrimental effect on the young person and should therefore be avoided.
